Dirty Politics - A Short Story

"None is by them now. They are the victims", said Samar Nath, a school teacher. He lived in the town called Nawabganj. Nimtala Primary School was his workplace. It was given such name as the school was in the village Nimtala, nearly 45 km from Nawabganj.

Samar sir used the local train to reach his school. To speak of the school, it was a well decorated pucca building. It had five rooms, a large courtyard,a large tree and a pleasant environmental. The students loved their school for the pleasant environment that the teachers created with their efforts. Samar sir was the headmaster of the school. He loved the village children most as he knew the disadvantages that a village child faced having belonged to a village background. His loving and gentle nature made him very dear to the children as well as to the villagers.

Suren, a villager, caught Samar sir,s attention most as his children would read in the primary school and were very good in learning. Sima and Rakhal were the children. Sima was in class II and Rakhal was in class III. Both of them were gentle, obedient and brilliant. But poverty was evident in their appearance. All these caught Samar sir's attention. He often brought chocolates for them and when absent in school, asked about them.

As days went by, Sima and Rakhal's father, Suren, became very familiar with Samar sir. Then came the bad time for the village. The panchayat election was declared. Naren was made a candidate from the village on ZPC party ticket. Before not a person from this village was given any election ticket. That year due to delimitation, Naren got the ticket. He lived in Nimtala, Suren's village. On the other hand, Shimul filed nomination on XYZ party ticket.

As near the polling day came so high the tension rose. The people's attitude made it clear that Shimul would win, but it pain Naren. So, to frighten the villagers and seal his victory, Naren planned a murder. Whom, it was not clear. He organised a programme. Not a single external person attended. Then he let loose his hooligans on a night with full permission. They found Suren on the way and murdered him. His dead body was found in the morning.

Everybody knew the culprit, but not dare to complain. As a result, Naren won in the election but the family of Suren fell into great poverty. The education of Sima and Rakhal stopped. They now work in farm-land along with their mother to survive. Their future totally got ruined. The people often talked of them. One day, while going to school Samar sir met Sima and Rakha. He felt sorry and murmured "None is by them. They are the victims."
