Childhood Lost - A Short Story
Childhood Lost
"Play all day" - that was the life of Kakoli when she was a mere child. Kakoli lived in the village Shyamapur with her parents. It was a remote village. Except the ration dealer, none of the village had a pucca house. The villagers were decreased into poverty. Like all other children of the village, Kakoli's childhood was very happy. She used to play all day long. No work only play - that was her life. She was a sweet-looking child. Everyone of her village, even the ration dealer, liked her for her sweet appearance and too sweet voice. Whenever she saw an elder, she would run towards them and start talking. How much busy they might be, villagers preferred to talk to her.
Days passed. Kakoli was admitted to a distant school. Then she felt their poverty. A few children use to go to school in good dresses, but Kakoli and her friends wore mediocre dresses - not noticeable, except the patched ones.
One day she asked her mother, "Mamma, the other children had good clothes, but ours are patched, why?" Mother just answered, "We are poor." That day Kakoli realised the difference between rich and poor. Her mentality altered. The sweet speaking child began to change. She stopped talking to the elders. She even stopped playing with other children. Even when she saw other school children eat delicious food, she didn't complain. Now she knew that her father did not have much money.
"They are poor and the poor have to wear tattered clothes, eat poor food etc." - this thought pained Kakoli. They were not entitled happiness in life. So, day by day Kakoli became quiet and composed. She did not go outside to play. She did not run to an elder to talk. She did not complain to her mother. It seemed that she had attained maturity. The villagers got surprised seeing the sudden change in Kakoli's behaviour. They started talking about her as they missed that brisk, sweet child very much.
